DepEd issues guidelines on anti-measles campaign

PASIG CITY— In response to the increase in the number of individuals contracting measles, the Department of Education (DepEd) has issued DepEd Memo No. 03 s.2014 on Thursday regarding the implementation of the anti-measles campaign in public schools. Following the advisory of the Department of Health (DOH), DepEd has ordered the Schools Division Superintendents (SDSs) and the Regional Directors (RDs) to oversee the smooth execution of the campaign.

School heads have been instructed to send home students exhibiting flu-like symptoms to rest and recuperate.

The DepEd is also asking schools to disseminate information about measles and immunization procedures as well as report identified cases to concerned local health units. They have also been advised to coordinate with the local government health units for the complete vaccination of children.

The systematic relay of information regarding students’ and teachers’ state of health is expected to be operationalized through the Preventive Alert System in Schools (PASS). Under the system, school principals must conduct, monitor, and maintain records of students and personnel’s daily health inspection. Pertinent information must be relayed to the SDS and to the DepEd central office for review and appropriate action.

Authorities recommend addressing any signs of measles at the onset. Measles are rapidly transmitted through air or direct contact, and when ignored it can cause diarrhea, dehydration, pneumonia, encephalitis, blindness, and deafness. It is especially hazardous for very young and undernourished children.

JUNIOR & SENIOR STUDENTS PROCLAIMED AS MR. & MS. SCIENCE 2013

After several postponements, the search for Mr. & Ms. Science 2013 finally culminated last Monday, October 14, at the CDN Arena in what the avid critiques say was the most high-tech pageant in our school’s history ever.

3rd year student David Kingston was proclaimed Mr. Science 2013 and was crowned by outgoing titlist Mark June Rodriguez. Kingston also won the Mr. Photogenic award. In the female division, Nicole de Mesa passed on her title to senior student Daisherene Driza as Ms. Science 2013 after winning two other awards, Best in Costume and Best in Talent Show.

Finalists included Miguel Luis de Guzman & Janelle Mitra (1^st Runners Up), Tyrone Salcedo & Denise Molo (2^nd Runners Up), Stephen dela Cruz & Stephanie Tornea (3^rd Runners Up) and Mclywane Prepotente & Naomi dela Cruz (4^th Runners Up).

Other special awards were presented that night, namely: Best Costume to the designer of Janelle Mitra (Dann Seterra and Ranelson Espaldon); Best in Uniform to Tyrone Salcedo and Stephanie Tornea; Teachers’ Choice to Stephen dela Cruz and Stephanie Tornea; Netizens’ Choice to Tyrone Salcedo and Denise Molo; Best in Costume to Tyrone Salcedo and Daisherenne Driza; Mr. & Ms. Friendship to Mclywane Prepotente and Janelle Mitra; Best in Talent Show to Mclywane Prepotente and Daisherenne Driza; Students’ Choice to Michael Ramirez and Janelle Mitra; Best in Casual Wear to Stephen dela Cruz and Naomi dela Cruz; Mr. & Ms. Photogenic to David Kingston and Naomi dela Cruz; Director’s Choice to Michael Ramirez and Coolyn Camat; Mr. & Ms. Personality to Tyrone Salcedo and Stephanie Tornea; and Best in Formal Wear to Miguel de Guzman and Coolyn Camat.

Center of the audience’s attention was the huge LED video wall that made the event more colorful and awe-inspiring thanks to Ms. Joanne dela Cruz who sponsored the high-tech VideoSonic equipment . Special thanks to the able VideoSonic staff who worked from very early in the morning until everyone was gone that evening.

Other sponsors were Jay Carlo Olaguer who was the official photographer of the event, My Coolection Shoppe for the Netizens’ Choice winners, Pevonia Botanica who gave gift packs for the winners care of Ms. Marie Elaine Palapag and Anthologie of the Scarf care of Ms. Logie Tonacao who provided scarves for the candidates.

CASA DEL NIÑO CLINCHES SAYAWIT CHAMPIONSHIPS IN BOTH ELEM & HS DIVISIONS

In the recently concluded Buwan ng Wika Celebration mounted by the San Pedro Tourism Council, the CDN Children’s Choir and CadeBox from the Elementary and Science High School Departments respectively were proclaimed Champions in the Sayawit competitions held last September 30 at the Pacita Astrodome in San Pedro City, Laguna.

The CDN Children’s Choir rendered their contest piece “Para Sa Iyo Bayani” and choice song “Piliin Mo Ang Pilipinas” with their choir master Mr. Kennedy Tabon at the helm. With their angelic voice and masterful performance, the kids won over the judges and audience alike and thunderous applause followed after they sung their last notes. It was clear that the group was going to win which was confirmed by a unanimous decision from the judges.

Later in the afternoon, CadeBox (a combination of Cadence and Malebox) performed the contest piece “Ka Bayani” together with “Isang Gabing Maliwanag ang Buwan”, an original composition by Mr. Chito Maramag who trained the group. It was a close fight as there were so many excellent performances from the competing choirs. However, CadeBox got the nod from the judges noting that aside from the vocals, they also considered the other important criteria namely, choreography, costumes, props and concept. Despite the split decision, the group was proclaimed winner after an intense deliberation.

The weeks prior to the competition were stressful to say the least as typhoons caused class suspensions and several delays. However, it was well worth it as Casa del Niño proved once again that it is indeed the home of chorale champions despite the naysayers.

Credits go to Mr. Jaspher Payag who designed the filipiniana inspired costumes, choreographed the movements of the children’s choir and also helped in the makeup of the CadeBox girls. Special thanks to Ms. Katherine Trangco and the Himig Sanghaya Chorale for a workshop before the competition.

A GROOVY ACQUAINTANCE PARTY HIGHLIGHTS THE SCHOOL YEAR’S FIRST QUARTER

Last July 13, the Casa del Niño Science High School students held their acquaintance party at the CDN Arena, Pacita 2 Campus, San Pedro, Laguna. The first big event of the school year, billed as “Groovy Ca Sa Party, Baby!”, was a well attended vintage-themed affair. Aside from the party, it merged competitions for the freshmen and the oath-taking ceremonies of Club and Student Council Officers who spearheaded the occasion.

Mr. Richard A. Pustasa, CDNSHS Principal, welcomed the students which included Casans from the Sta. Rosa Campus who have been invited to the party for many years now. “This event is not just a venue for fun but also a way to unite students from both campuses,” the school head said. Ashley Papas Rinonos, a senior student, delivered her inaugural address as President of the Student Council.

Several Grade 7 students competed for the traditional Mr. & Ms. Freshman pageant and in the end, two students emerged with the title: Jake Zavala, Mr. Freshman 2013 and Aaliyah Benizano, Ms. Freshman 2013. For the other competition, an energetic and graceful group from section Keppler won the Freshman Dance Contest.

Special awards were also given to other deserving students. New Faces of the Year were Grade 7 students Nicole Cortez and Princess Nicole de Mesa while the organizers declared David Kingston and Nica Mendez as Mr. & Ms. Fashionista. It was deemed that both of them stood out in their vintage-inspired outfits.

The students enjoyed the evening with the blaring music, spell-binding lights and a photo booth that captured the gaiety for posterity. It was observed that the merrymaking was both riotous and peaceful at the same time from the moment it started at 7 PM until it concluded before midnight.

According to the SC Officers, proceeds from the ticket sales will be used for their proposed projects this school year.

MODERN 2-STOREY BUILDING SOON TO RISE IN CDN PHASE 6 CAMPUS

A multi-purpose structure is now in its early stages of construction at the Casa del Niño Montessori School Phase 6 campus to replace the old one that was razed by a fire last February 11 this year. The blaze which started from a neighbor’s hut at the back of the school quickly consumed the wood and concrete building that housed the science laboratory, computer room, AVR, music room and dance studio.

The ruins were demolished and cleared during the summer break and now, the foundations are being prepared. The proposed 2-storey edifice will contain a Students’ Lounge and an Audio-Visual Room at the ground floor which, when needed, may be converted to a social hall with the retraction of partitions. The second level, according to EVP Dr. Mark G. Acierto, will house a covered basketball court. “The pupils and parents have long clamored for this facility and now is the time for us to give it to them,” he stated adding that construction will be completed within the year.

New facilities and laboratories are now located in other rooms elsewhere in the campus to replace the ones that were charred by the fire. Newly purchased scientific equipment and paraphernalia are now being set up in the science laboratory while computer units are about to be delivered in time for the opening of classes in the Elementary Department set for the 17^th of June 2013.

“The destruction of the old building has not weakened us,” said the CEO of CDNSSI, Ms. Farah Acierto-Cabanban. “Instead , it has strengthened our resolve to move forward and look at it as an opportunity to give Casans better and updated facilities,” she added.

The plans for the proposed building were revealed during the summer break. It is a modern structure with curvilinear walls and primary colors reminiscent of Montessori materials used by the pupils of the campus.

Dr. Rosario G. Acierto, President of CDNSSI, looks at things positively. “All things happen for a reason and we cannot be derailed by misfortunes,” she declared. Since her children are now in charge of the school, this is, in a way, a test of their abilities to manage the undertaking. She says that the construction is symbolic in many ways. “We also look at the rising of the new building as an indication of the resurgence of Casa del Niño Schools System as one of the best institutions in Southern Tagalog and Northern Luzon,” she concluded.

SY 2013-2014 BEGINS WITH OPTIMISM AT CDNSHS

EVP Dr. Mark G. Acierto welcomes the Casans to the new school year during the first day general assembly at the CDNSHS Arena.

The school year 2013-2014 officially started on June 6, 2013 with a general assembly at the Casa del Niño Science High School Arena presided over by the Executive Vice President, Dr. Mark G. Acierto. With most of the 446 high school enrollees in attendance, Dr. Acierto welcomed the Casans to the school and reiterated the vision of the institution by inspiring them to think way ahead and preparing for their future today by building on their strengths and interests.

After his opening remarks, the EVP endorsed the new Principal, Mr. Richard Pustasa to the students. Mr. Pustasa was formerly the Principal of the CDN Sta. Rosa branch but was a faculty member of the main campus for many years before that. The Principal then introduced the teachers, old and new, to the body.

The four high school levels from Grades 7 and 8 to 3^rd Year and 4^th year have 3 sections each for a total of 12 classes. Of the 446 currents enrollees, 218 are males and 228 are females. The Registrar’s Office reports that there are 67 new students who came from other institutions while 13 Casans who previously transferred to other schools came back this year. Ms. Yoly Jakosalem, CDN Registrar, is happy to note that the current High School population has exceeded that of last year despite the downward trend that pervades other private institutions.

Dr. Mark G. Acierto ended the opening ceremonies by directing the students to report to their advisers in their respective classrooms. The EVP is optimistic that this will be a brighter and more fruitful school year not only for the main campus but also for the rest of the schools belonging to Casa del Niño Schools System, Inc.

It has been more than three decades since Casa del Nino started to inculcate students how to bring out the best in their minds, bodies and souls. Through the years, children were taught with arithmetic , grammar and many more. But as a current student of this institution, I believe that none of these things is a basis of being a True Casan at all. Because if you’re a real one, you should possess the greatest lesson this institution has taught us all. It is a True Casan’s strongest armor and greatest victory. It is something that we have all in our hearts. And it is nothing but best character, I suppose. Nothing but the greatest character.

But one question binds us all. What does it take to be a real Casan? Who is a real Casan? Are you even a real one? There are several Casans out there, but only a few are true. Only a few strives to be the best. Only a few strives to be phenomenal. But I believe that being a True Casan is not all about being great at anything or being academically powerful, because a real Casan’s power lies within his heart. It’s all about his values and his character. And the True Casan’s biggest mission? It is to inspire other Casans to be like them. It is to have the best lineage of Casans. It is to have every Casan the best in his own way. It is to have every Casan an inspiration to others. It is to have every Casan phenomenal.

And in the end, we Casans should unite and unleash the power that lies within us. The domination of True Casans shall prevail. A Casan that loves. A Casan that hopes. A Casan that inspires. We are True Casans in our own ways. Therefore, we are phenomenal. It is the greatest prodigy of our generation. It is the Casan Phenomena. And as a Phenomenal Casan, I have a big question for you. Do you think you are one of us?
